Surface mount PPTCs save space in mobile, wearable devices

Littelfuse has announced polymeric positive temperature coefficients (PPTCs) that protect and save space in mobile, wearable designs.

The PolySwitch zeptoSMDC series provides over-current and over-voltage protection on the signal lines for both the lithium-ion battery pack ICs and fuel gauge. The PPTCs are for high voltage (13V DC) applications and are available in the small 0201 surface-mount size. This makes them particularly suitable for increasingly smaller mobile and wearable product designs, says Littelfuse.

The PPTCs are part of the PolySwitch family of resettable over-current protection devices, and can be used in consumer electronics applications, including smartphones, notebook PCs, tablets, and e-readers, wearable devices (smart watches, fitness trackers), wireless speakers, portable game players, portable medical equipment and mobile point-of-sale (PoS) equipment.

“The zeptoSMDC is smaller than any currently available components in its class,” said Jin Xu, product manager at Littelfuse. It saves PCB space due to its small 0201 size footprint and helps protect the battery monitor IC from electrical over-stress. It also resets to normal operation after a fault is cleared.

The zeptoSMDC series PPTC are available in tape and reel format in quantities of 15,000. Sample requests may be placed through authorised Littelfuse distributors worldwide.
