ST launches dual-range pressure sensor for wearables and diving
STMicroelectronics has introduced the LPS27DEWO, a high-accuracy MEMS pressure sensor that combines altitude and underwater depth monitoring in a single device. Designed for wearables, sports cameras and outdoor equipment, the sensor offers two selectable full-scale ranges in a compact package.
The extended underwater pressure range of 6,060 hPa enables depth measurement for recreational and enthusiast divers, including during ascent from depths greater than 40 metres, where decompression considerations become particularly important. The device is also designed to withstand water pressure at depths of up to 110 metres.
By integrating two pressure-measurement ranges into one component, the LPS27DEWO can help simplify system design and reduce component count in products such as smart rings, smartwatches, sports cameras and other outdoor and underwater equipment.
The LPS27DEWO is housed in a cylindrical metal-lid package measuring 2.7 × 2.7 mm, with a height of 1.7 mm and a 10-lead land grid array (LGA) footprint. The package is designed to support sealing integration and provide high overpressure resistance.
Low-noise pressure sensing contributes to a specified accuracy of ±0.5% of full scale. A new black potting gel also helps eliminate light-induced measurement errors, reducing reading variability under strong illumination in wearable applications.
These features are intended to support reliable altitude and depth measurements across changing environmental and lighting conditions.
The LPS27DEWO supports I²C, SPI and I3C digital interfaces, with operation at 1.2 V. Its low operating current is specified at 1.7 µA under the stated 3.8 Pa measurement condition, making the device suitable for power-conscious portable designs.
The combination of a compact footprint, low power consumption and multiple interface options gives designers flexibility when integrating pressure sensing into space-constrained wearable and outdoor electronics.
