Murata claims MEMS resonator is world’s smallest
Claimed to be the world’s smallest 32.768kHz MEMS resonator, the WMRAG series, will contribute to reduced size and power consumption of IoT devices and wearable devices, says Murata.
Compact electronic components that consume less electrical power are used in digital devices for IoT and wearable applications. Many modern devices rely on accurate timing, driving a need for low power consumption resonators, which are required to operate continuously to provide timing signals.
The WMRAG resonators are based on miniature MEMS technology. They exhibit stable frequency characteristics with a temperature drift of less than 160 ppm across their operating range of -30 to +85 degree C. Initial frequency accuracy is ±20 ppm which is the level expected of a more sophisticated (and expensive) crystal resonator, says the company.
An in-built 6.9pf capacitor reduces the components needed for the circuit that generates the reference clock signal, which reduces the amount of space required.
The WMRAG MEMS resonator measures 0.9 x 0.6 x 0.3mm, which is more than 50 per cent smaller than a conventional 32.768 kHz crystal resonator, points out Murata. The resonator is available in silicon-based wafer-level chip scale packaging (WL-CSP), and can be fully integrated into an IC made of a homogeneous semiconductor material.
Stable reference clock signals are generated by reducing the IC gain based on a low ESR value of 75kΩ. Murata reports that internal tests indicate that the device cuts power consumption by 13 per cent, compared to conventional 32,768kHz resonators.
Mass production is scheduled to begin in December 2018.
