MIKROE USB-C Sink 5 Click adds USB PD power to embedded designs

MIKROE has introduced the USB-C Sink 5 Click, a compact add-on development board that enables embedded systems to receive and negotiate power from USB-C Power Delivery (PD) sources.

Based on the STUSB4531QTR from STMicroelectronics, the board is a standalone USB Type-C and USB PD sink controller designed to manage power negotiation and delivery in embedded applications.

The USB-C Sink 5 Click is aimed at applications that need to replace traditional DC barrel-jack or micro-USB power inputs with USB-C Power Delivery, including portable electronics, instruments, wearables and mobile devices.

“USB-C Sink 5 Click is perfect for wearables and mobile gadgets that need to draw power from modern USB-C chargers instead of traditional barrel jacks,” said Nebojsa Matic, CEO of MIKROE. “It is suitable for high-end instruments and portable electronics requiring standard-compliant 5 V to 20 V power negotiation, and is ideal for replacing legacy DC power inputs with universal USB-C charging in field-deployed devices. This Click is also an excellent solution for retrofitting DC barrel or USB micro-B interfaces to support current USB-C power standards.”

USB Power Delivery negotiation

The USB-C Sink 5 Click supports autonomous USB PD contract negotiation through its Autorun mode, allowing the board to negotiate an appropriate power profile without requiring continuous host-MCU intervention.

Its default Power Data Object (PDO) configuration is stored in internal non-volatile memory. The board also supports dead-battery operation, VBUS monitoring and input power-path control, together with integrated protection and discharge functions.

High-voltage surge protection provides additional protection for the power-input circuitry.

The Click board communicates with the host microcontroller through an I²C interface with selectable addresses. An active-low, open-drain interrupt output provides status signalling, while high-voltage open-drain general-purpose outputs provide additional control functionality.

USB-C power for embedded designs

The USB-C Sink 5 Click is designed for developers evaluating or integrating USB-C PD power into embedded products. Potential applications include portable instruments, field-deployed equipment, wearables, mobile electronics and other systems requiring negotiated USB-C power.

The board can also be used when upgrading existing products from legacy DC barrel-jack or micro-USB inputs to USB-C-based power delivery.

As part of MIKROE’s mikroBUS Click board ecosystem, the USB-C Sink 5 Click includes ClickID, allowing compatible host systems to identify the board automatically.

The Click board can be used with host systems supporting the mikroBUS standard and is supported by MIKROE’s mikroSDK™ open-source libraries. Ready-to-use embedded projects are also available through MIKROE’s EmbeddedWiki platform, supporting evaluation and custom development.

MIKROE Click board ecosystem

The USB-C Sink 5 Click joins MIKROE’s portfolio of more than 2,000 Click boards, providing developers with modular hardware for adding functions and peripherals to embedded designs.

MIKROE develops hardware and software based on industry-standard interfaces and technologies, with the aim of reducing development time for embedded systems.

Its ecosystem includes Click peripheral boards, development boards, compilers, programmers and debuggers, smart displays, the NECTO multi-architectural integrated development environment (IDE) and the EmbeddedWiki platform.

MIKROE also develops open standards and technologies including mikroBUS, mikroSDK, SiBrain and DISCON. The company says mikroBUS has been adopted by more than 100 microcontroller manufacturers and integrated into their development boards.
