Medical implants address data-intensive applications

Medical implant communication system (MICS) modules in the Type 1RM family from Murata now include the LBAA0PC1RMH298 module. This small MICS band radio module uses the 402 to 405MHz frequency band and supports a 128kbits per second data rate. It can cover a communication range of up to 2m and is designed for use in body-worn and implantable monitoring/diagnostic devices.

The LBAA0PC1RMH298 has the capacity to address data-intensive tasks, with typical applications suggested by Murata as insulin, drug, and baclofen pumps, as well as arrhythmia and bladder monitors.

The module is supplied in a compact form factor, measuring 8.6 x 5.6 x 1.7mm. Murata’s proprietary wireless technology integrates active and passive components into a single, miniaturised package. The module has a low power budget with a sleep state current consumption of just 0.2 microA.

Murata is a manufacturer of electronic components, modules and devices. The company’s range of products includes ceramic capacitors, resistors or thermistors, inductors and shock chokes, ceramic resonators, crystals and oscillators, buzzers, as well as sensors and interference filters. While the company reports that it generates most of its turnover from ceramic capacitors, it says a leader in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules, DC/DC converters for mounting on PCBs and is one of the main manufacturers of standard and specific electrical energy conversion products.

Murata was established in 1944. It is based in Japan and has European offices in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, Spain, Finland and Hungary, as well as in the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.
