Children’s smart watch has gamification feature; tracks physical activity

Based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear platform, the Xplora X5 Play smart watch is a suitable first phone for young children (aged four to 11 years) and is the only smart watch for children with gamification and a step tracker to encourage physical activity.

The Norwegian company offers the Xplora X5 Play in black, blue or pink colourways. Children can make and receive calls from up to 50 approved contacts, wand parents can be aware of the wearer’s location at all times. Kids can take and store up to 1,000 pictures, play games and track their steps to earn prize incentives through the Xplora Goplay platform which encourages children to be more physically active.

Sten Kirkbak, CEO of Xplora, explains the inspiration behind the design: “Two questions that almost every parent asks themselves are, how can I better communicate with my children, and how can I get them more active,” he said. “No other watch for kids provides the combination of phone, smart watch, activity tracker, safety and a Goplay platform with the incentives needed to get kids up and moving,” he said.

Available in Norway, before its UK launch, the X5 Play includes several hardware and software upgrades. The X5 Play works wherever a smartphone would work. It keeps parents and their children connected and parents have control over what their child can do and who they can communicate with.

The X5 Play uses GPS with GSM and Wi-Fi triangulation to keep parents informed where their children are at all times. Parents can additionally set up safe zones via a Google Maps integration, and they will be alerted when their children enter or leave those safe zones.

The smart watch also encourages kids to be more active. It includes a step counter, rewards for every 1,000 steps taken, and there are interactive gamification experiences, including Doctor Who and Dora and the Lost City of Gold on the Goplay platform.

Children are encouraged to explore their environment and record adventures using the watch’s 2Mpixel camera that stores up to 1,000 pictures on the device.

Xplora and the X5 Play comply with the strictest security and transparency standards in Asia and Europe, including GDPR compliance, reassures the company. This ensures that all the data is protected from mis-use and exploitation. X5 Play is also CPRA and CE/FCC-compliant.

“We are delighted to be collaborating with Xplora to fuel this growth with innovative products that kids love and parents desire,” said Pankaj Kedia, senior director and global head, Smart Wearables segment, Qualcomm Technologies. “Our Snapdragon Wear platform, the heart of Xplora’s X5 Play smartwatch, is making it possible to deliver rich, interactive experiences while staying connected with 4G LTE, staying safer with GPS, and delivering extended battery life,” he added.
