Battery charger chip reduces design and test time for wearables

Claimed to improve functional integration without compromising performance and power consumption, the STBC02 IC battery charger management chip is from STMicroelectronics.

The integrated IC combines linear battery charging, a 150mA LDO voltage regulator, two SPDT load switches, a smart reset/watchdog function, and a protection circuit module that protects the battery from damage under fault conditions and allows it to be used with Li-ion batteries without any other protection chip.

It reduces footprint and simplifies design, for lower cost and faster time-to-market for wearable healthcare, fitness, messaging and social applications, says the company.

Functions are controlled via the SWIRE protocol that requires only one microcontroller I/O pin.

An integrated power path allows the battery to be charged and the overall system to be powered at the same time. An adjustable Vbatt floating voltage allows the use of different Li-ion chemistries and also the possibility to implement customised charging strategies.

To preserve battery life, there is a 10nA shutdown current and on-demand battery surveillance for the system controller.
