Arm introduces IP targeting mobile uses

While CPU performance on smartphones has increased on an average of 20 per cent every year without compromising battery life, laptops have not been able to deliver annual performance gains averaging single-digit per cent growth.

Recognising this inequality, Arm has introduced a suite of computing and multimedia IP for smartphones.   

The Arm client IP platform for 2019 is claimed to offer increased productivity, immersive AR/VR and gaming, AI/machine learning (ML), and UHD 8K viewing experiences on more devices. The IP suite also complements Arm’s Project Trillium platform, optimising ML and AI uses at the edge.

The suite includes the Arm Cortex-A76 CPU, based on DynamIQ technology. It is claimed to deliver laptop-class performance while maintaining the power efficiency of a smartphone. Building on that momentum of the Arm-based Windows10 PCs, delivering over 20 hours of battery life, the Cortex-A76 CPU delivers four-fold compute performance improvements for AI/ML at the edge, enabling responsive, secure experiences on PCs and smartphones for new means of engagement by consumers.    

Another element in the suite is the Mali-G76, high-performance gaming, cross-platform graphics processor.

The gaming market is expected to reach $137.9 billion in 2018, one of the largest markets by revenue, worldwide and a driver for consumer performance demands with gaming on-the-go. The Mali-G76 gives developers and consumers delivers 30 per cent more efficiency and performance density than the previous generation. It provides developers with more performance headroom to bring high-end gaming titles to mobile app ecosystems and enable them to write new apps that integrate augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR).  

There is also the Mali-V76 GPU for a UHD immersive experience, says Arm. The IP has been designed to meet the trend towards UHD 8K content, with support for encoding and decoding content on smartphones and other devices. The Mali-V76 supports 8k decode up to 60frames per second or four 4K streams at 60 frames per second giving consumers the opportunity to stream four movies, record video while video conferencing, or watch four games in 4k. At lower resolutions, and still at full HD, Mali-G76 will support up to 16 streams of content, creating a 4×4 video wall.
