AI powers healthcare assistant to protect crowds

As part of the international drive to maintain public health during a worldwide pandemic, general purpose graphics processor unit (GPGPU) company, Aetina, and edge AI computing specialist, SmartCow, have co-operated to build an algorithm with six types of AI models that are based on the edge computing platform.

Edgar is the name of the AI-powered healthcare assistant built using Aetina’s AN110-NAO platform. Edgar has been developed for a safe work environment and patient care. It supports six types of AI models, for social distance estimation, masks detection and safe sneeze action classification. Among these functions, Edgar creates a safe environment in times of medical emergencies and assists the front line medical staff in preventing the respiratory disease. For example, facemask recognition can provide guidance and directions to mask dispensing machines when assessing if people entering a premises are wearing masks. It can determine whether the person is wearing PPE, N95 or surgical mask types. Edgar can also be used for social distancing detection; the device could combine with a policy network and keep public activity in six feet (2m) between two people.

IEdgar is GDPR-compliant. Images will be processed and remain on the edge system; no data will transfer to the cloud.

The compact AN110-NAO measures just 87.4 x 67.4 x 46mm, enabling it to be efficiently integrated into equipment. It is supplied with common I/O support, including an I2S slot for audio output. For Edgar’s healthcare application, this enables audible warnings. For visual AI, the AN110-NAO supports MIPI CSI-II interface one 4k or two FHD cameras. The high resolution is essential for accurate reality recognition.

Aetina was founded in Taiwan in 2012 as a long-term support provider of high-performance GPGPU and Jetson edge AI computing solutions for embedded applications. The company is focusing on the industrial market, providing industrial components and longevity service.

SmartCow is an AI engineering company founded in 2016. It is headquartered in Malta and specialises in building deep learning models Ai-IoT hardware and aims to make hardware/software integration seamless.

SmartCow says it offers a vertical solution to the problem ranging from the underlying technologies for building or accelerating video analytics to complete turnkey solutions.
