Waterproof digital sensor measures air and water pressure
Low power consumption, due to a dedicated, customised application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) helps the HSPPAD143A waterproof digital pressure sensor, realise a low current consumption, says Alps Alpine.
The sensor consumes 1.8 microA (in low power mode), making it suitable for wearable devices and always-on IoT equipment which need long periods of operation, such as flow meters for utilities.
Wearable devices, particularly smart watches, have become increasingly sophisticated and multi-functional. Software and applications support features such as navigation, health maintenance and recording of sports data, for example. Sensors need to ascertain conditions within the surrounding environment, for example at high altitudes or deep underwater.
The HSPPAD143A has an expanded pressure measurement range of 300 to 2100hPa, compared to 300 to 1100hPa of existing products and a water-resistant design. This means it works in both low-pressure environments at altitudes up to 9,000 meters and high-pressure conditions down to 10 meters underwater, allowing measurement in both open air and water with a single sensor.
The HSPPAD143A can be used in combination with an O-ring for water resistance. It has a high sensing resolution with 17-bit digital data output (2Pa/LSB), a built-in first in, first out (FIFO) memory. The sensor can be used for a wearable products or applications like pressure measurement in gas meters.
