Sensor hub IC includes Bluetooth v4.1

Designed for wearable products, the TZ1041MBG is an application processor that has been added to Toshiba Electronics Europe’s ApP LiteM TZ1000 family.

According to the company, it meets increasing demand to support multiple external sensors. It complies to Bluetooth core specification v4.1 to use the extended hub features of Bluetooth.

The ARM Cortex-M4F with DSP and floating point processing unit can collect and process data from multiple external sensors. A Bluetooth Smart controller and processor capture data from external sensors that can be connected via various I/Os, such as I2C, UART, SPI and ADC. The processor also incorporates 256kbyte SRAM operating memory and 8Mbit NOR flash memory to save sensor data.

The device can perform as a Bluetooth hub for collecting, processing and storing data from multiple sources as well as transferring the processed data to external devices such as smartphones and tablets. Automatic reconnection improves the operating efficiency, claims the company, and usability of the user system by using Low Duty Cycle Directed Advertising.

The low power design allows it to change supply voltage in response to the processor frequency, making it particularly suitable for wearable products that require long operating hours between each battery charge.

A 24bit, high-resolution ADC with high speed switches connecting to three input channels enable TZ1041MBG-equipped devices to measure biomedical signals, such as the pulse and the heart’s electrical signal.

The company has developed software algorithms, such as Activity Monitoring, PPG (Photoplethysmography) Monitoring and ECG (electrocardiography) Monitoring.

The processor measures 6.7 x 8.0 x 1.5mm and is scheduled to enter mass production in early 2016, engineering samples will be available in October 2015.
