Cores offer lowest power consumption connectivity IP for wearables and IoT Andy Pratt April 16, 2015 ICs & Semiconductors, Power, Wearable Designed to enable the integration of ultra-low power communications in SoCs targeting wearables, IoT and other long battery life connected devices that need to be cost-sensitive, Imagination Technologies has announced the first members of its Ensigma Whisper flexible connectivity IP family. The radio processing units (RPUs) can be used to integrate Wi-Fi 802.11n, Bluetooth Smart, or a combination of the two, depending on a specific application. The RPUs are based on the low power Ensigma Whisper Series5 architecture. Wearable and low power IoT devices must have connectivity IP built from the ground up with a focus on low power consumption and compact area. The Whisper IP cores are configurable engines that are purpose-built for integration onto next-generation SoCs. There are three versions offered. The C5400 is a WiFi 802.11n IP for low-power devices. It is capable of audio/video streaming and achieves WiFi connectivity at the power levels of Bluetooth Classic, with better performance per MHz, claims the company. The second version is the C5300, a Bluetooth Smart IP for ultra-low power, short range connectivity providing control functionality in sensor hubs, wearables and home automation. The C5401 completes the offering and combines Bluetooth Smart for control applications and WiFi 802.11n for streaming; capable of operating concurrently. The RPUs feature highly optimised, configurable hardware along with the company‘s PowerGearing for Ensigma that optimises both static and dynamic power consumption in the cores. The tightly-coupled modem/processor means that for sensor applications, customers can choose to eliminate the host processor or alleviate its load, leading to the smallest embedded system size and lowest power consumption. Integrated, optimised Ensigma RPUs and MIPS CPUs are at the heart of the Connected Processor IP Platform, which delivers multi-standard connectivity, alongside a high-performance Linux or RTOS based applications environment. Whisper licensees can also leverage Imagination’s FlowCloud IoT device-to-cloud technology, which connects devices to the internet and each other, enabling easy product registration and updates as well as access to a growing portfolio of services from Imagination and its partners. The Ensigma Whisper RPUs are available for licensing now. http://www.imgtec.com WEARTECHDESIGN.COM – Latest News/Advice on Technology for Wearable Devices Weartechdesign is unlike any other website currently serving the technology for wearable devices.
