Red AlInGaP microLEDs bring colour performing micro lenses for AR glasses

Demonstration units of red microLEDs based on AlInGaP material have been added to Micledi’s portfolio of R, G and B microLEDs, manufactured in a CMOS-compatible flow, free of arsenide.

Micledi’s strategy is to enable true consumer AR glasses by making the best individual colour-performing microLEDs, which when coupled with the company’s proprietary micro-lenses can be integrated into the full-colour three-panel microLED display module.

Different applications (true consumer, industrial, automotive, for example) require different optimal performance parameters. Micledi’s CEO Sean Lord observed “There is no one-size-fits-all solution for AR glasses. This achievement, with our previously announced blue, green and red GaN µLEDs, opens the door to a broader offering of display module performance parameters which enables Micledi to serve customers developing AR glasses from medium to high resolution and medium to high brightness.”

Dr. Soeren Steudel, co-founder and CTO Micledi, stated, “Using advanced photolithography . . . 300mm wafer fabs assures that microLEDs . . . will achieve lowest defectivity, highest process control and repeatability, and capitalises on the symbiosis in manufacturing that comes from building our microLEDs in the same fabs and fab processes that advanced ASICs for microLED control and driving are made.”

The company will demonstrate microLEDs with excellent colour performance across the full range of drive currents for many different types of AR glasses appliances in blue, green and two optimised versions of red.

Micledi’s first red on GaN has a wavelength centred at 620nm and good FWHM of less than 50nm. The red on AlInGaP achieves 653nm wavelength at extremely narrow FWHM of less than 9nm. The addition to the colour portfolio is Ferrari-red, free of arsenide, CMOS compatible, said the company.

The company said that its three-panel approach to microLED full-colour displays is positioned to achieve the highest performance standards in AR glasses which will be able to be used in indoor or semi-darkened light settings.

Micledi will be at booth 54946 at the Venetian Expo at CES 2023 (05 to 08 January) in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
