Gluocmeter is worn on the wrist – no needle required
A non-invasive glucometer will be launched at CES 2022 this week by Quantum Operation. The wrist-worn monitoring sensor provides continuous monitoring and is capable of recording pre- and post-meal glucose level changes.
It is believed to be the world’s first non-invasive glucometer and is in the form of a wristband. It uses patented spectrum sensing technology to measure glucose in a person’s bloodstream through the skin.
The non-invasive 24/7 monitoring is made possible by Quantum Operation’s core technologies that include the novel spectrometer materials. One is designed to emit an optimal spectrum and another is highly responsive to target spectra. It also includes firmware that efficiently extracts targeted data by cancelling noise. These technologies can be used to measure all types of vital signs, ranging from heart rate to oxygen saturation (SPO2), says Quantum Operation. The technologies also enable healthcare businesses to compile accurate big data to understand and manage healthcare.
The wristband is linked to an app, which can display the reading before and after a meal in real time. It is a convenient and painless way for diabetic patients to monitor their blood glucose levels, says Japanese start-up Quantum Operation.
“Although checking one’s blood glucose level both before and after a meal is important, that adds to patients’ already taxing daily routine of sticking a needle into their fingers or arms so many times a day, said CEO, Kaxuma Kato. “We are thrilled to be able to make this all pain-free and effortless for them.”
He adds that this technology will “revolutionise” the daily management of diabetes, a condition affecting 463 million people worldwide and which is responsible for 1.5 million deaths each year.
