Small MEMS oscillators boast lowest power operation

MEMS oscillators from Microchip, the DSC6000 family, are claimed to be the smallest in the industry and with the lowest power consumption over 2.0kHz to 100MHz.

The single-output MEMS oscillators can be used as clock references in small, battery-powered devices such as wearables and IoT devices, says the company. They also meet the stringent mechanical durability and reliability requirements within AEC-Q100, for automotive use.

They are housed in industry standard 4pin DFN packages ranging from 1.6 x 1.2mm to 7.0 x 5.0mm, and consume just 1.3mA (typical), less than half the current consumption of the lowest-power quartz-based oscillators. Maximum operating temperature range is -40 to +85 degree C with ±25ppm maximum drift. They can sustain 500 times more shock and five times more vibration than a quartz oscillator, says the company, for stability in most operating environments.

The DSC60xx and DSC61xx are in production today and available now in 1.6 x 1.2mm; 2.0 x 1.6mm; 2.5 x 2.0mm in 4pin VLGA; and 3.2 x 2.5mm in 4pin VDFN.

The company’s ClockWorks online configuration tool allows designers to select frequency, package size, ppm and temperature range and request complimentary samples. The TimeFlash field programming kit provides instant frequency generation by fusing the one-time programmable (OTP) memory in a blank DSC6000 part that can be ordered separately.

A Field Programming Kit supports the DSC6000 family and evaluation boards programmed to customer specifications are available upon request.
