Architecture is low power for connectivity IP in IoT and wearable devices

Ensigma Series4 ‘Whisper’ low-power radio processing unit (RPU) architecture is designed to drive a new generation of wearables, IoT and other connected devices where ultra-low power consumption and low cost points are key, says Imagination Technologies.

The RPUs provide multi-standard support in a single architecture, designed to enable customers to bring standards such as WiFi, Bluetooth Classic, Bluetooth Smart, NFC, GNSS and other existing or emerging low-power connectivity technologies onto SoCs. By bringing this functionality on-chip, customers can minimise power consumption, silicon footprint and system cost compared with conventional solutions, claims the company.
Whisper RPUs are designed specifically for next-generation ultra-low power, cost-sensitive devices. It supports a range of lower bit rate connectivity standards needed in IoT and other small-footprint connected devices. The RPUs have configurable hardware with Imagination’s PowerGearing for Ensigma that optimises both static and dynamic power consumption in the cores. The tightly coupled modem/processor can eliminate the host processor or alleviate its load, to reduce embedded system size and lower power consumption.
The cores will be available in Q4 2014.
